Hemenway & Barnes Expands Tax and Nonprofit Practices with Additions of Michael Porter and Brad Bedingfield
Hemenway & Barnes, one of Boston’s leading legal and fiduciary firms, is pleased to announce that Michael Porter and Brad Bedingfield have joined the firm as counsel.
Mr. Porter has more than 30 years of state and local tax experience. His practice focuses on advising clients on state income and sales/use tax matters, appeals to the Massachusetts Appellate Tax Board, ruling requests and general state tax advice. By addressing state tax implications early on, Mr. Porter assists clients with developing thoughtful and measured strategies that meet their individual and business goals.
Prior to joining Hemenway & Barnes, Mr. Porter led Deloitte’s Multistate Tax Practice in Boston and worked with the firm’s Washington National Tax Office. He was also a national partner at Arthur Andersen and the Deputy General Counsel at the Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR). Mr. Porter is a member of the Massachusetts Bar, serves on the Massachusetts Department of Revenue Advisory Council and is a Trustee of the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation.
Mr. Bedingfield’s practice concentrates on representing tax exempt organizations and providing estate planning advice for international and domestic families. He has over a decade of private practice with national firms and previously worked as a tax law specialist with the Exempt Organizations Division of the IRS. Mr. Bedingfield assists private foundations and public charities with navigating complex tax regulations and procedures. His experience includes formation, fundraising, partnerships, terminations, and development of planned giving programs. He also advises private clients on securing their long-term goals related to preserving and protecting their wealth and executing their philanthropic endeavors
A member of the Massachusetts Bar, Mr. Bedingfield is also Co-Chair of the Tax Exempt Organizations Section of the Boston Bar Association, and Vice Chair of the Boston chapter of the International Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. Prior to practicing law, Mr. Bedingfield was in academia and has a doctorate in English language and literature.
