Brad Bedingfield and Kevin Ellis to Present "So I Married a European – How to Leave My Money to My Spouse, Not to the Government"
Brad Bedingfield and Kevin Ellis are presenting at the Boston Estate Planning Council (BEPC) virtual roundtable breakfast on October 27.
Brad and Kevin will discuss tax issues around leaving property to spouses in cross-border marriages. They will help navigate the U.S. rules for giving or leaving money to non-U.S. spouses, issues around marital trusts, and tax and legal traps that may occur where spouses have ongoing connections to other countries. Drawing from examples under Canadian, U.K., Irish, and German law, Brad and Kevin will provide examples of how failure to account properly for foreign domestic law and applicable treaties can undermine otherwise careful tax and estate planning, and potentially open up other serious financial and legal problems as well.
