Nonprofit Associate Attorney

Hemenway & Barnes LLP is seeking a midlevel attorney to join our growing Nonprofit Practice Group. We represent tax-exempt organizations in New England and around the country, including higher education institutions, museums, health care organizations, community foundations, private foundations, and many other nonprofits, on a wide range of matters related to charitable giving and planned gifts; tax compliance for private foundations, charitable trusts, donor-advised fund sponsors, public charities, social welfare organizations, political organizations, labor unions, business leagues, and tax-exempt clubs; nonprofit formation, affiliations and mergers, and dissolutions; governance review and training; contract review; and representation before the Internal Revenue Service, state regulatory agencies, and the courts. Together with our Philanthropic Services Group and our affiliated New Hampshire trust company, Hemenway Trust Company LLC, we also administer numerous private foundations and help them realize their charitable purposes.

Our Nonprofit Practice Group works in conjunction with our other practice groups (Private Client, Litigation, Business Law, Real Estate Law, and Government and Elections Law), but focuses specifically on the legal needs of nonprofit organizations. We are looking for someone with a J.D. degree, with relevant experience in one or more of the following areas: charitable giving, tax-exempt / nonprofit organization law, nonprofit governance and board service, and corporate law, who wants to focus their practice primarily on representation of nonprofits. We are particularly interested in candidates who have, or are willing to develop, expertise in tax matters related to nonprofit organizations who may currently be working in an estate planning or tax practice. Successful candidates should have an entrepreneurial spirit, committed to advancing a growing practice.
